Essay on Babies Having Babies - 1538 Words

Babies Having Babies Even though the teen pregnancy and birth rates have dropped by one-third over the past decade, teen pregnancy in the United States is a growing problem. According to data by the National Center for Health Statistics and other official data, one in three girls still become pregnant by the age of twenty (Brown lines 1-3). In the United States one million adolescent girls become pregnant every year causing the U.S. to be the leader of the developed world in teen pregnancy. The parents supervision, communication, connectedness, and the parents a ttitudes and values about teen sex are all a key role in preventing or prolonging sex for their teens (59-60). Teens are more more likely to give into the pressures of sex, alcohol, and drugs and when young adolescents are under the influence they do not think of the consequences of having sex (63). Federal and state surveys show that many adults are the fathers of nearly two-thirds of the babies born to these teenage mothers. The Alan Guttmacher Institute did a survey that showed shocking results that thirty nine percent of fifteen year old mothers had fathers of their babies that were twenty or older, seventeen year old moms had fifty-five percent of adult fathers to their babies, and nineteen year old moms had seventy-eight percent of adult fathers to their babies (65). These five factors play a huge role in teens becoming pregnant and unless something is done today, it may nev er stop. In addition to the roles playing in teen pregnancy there are also groups for complex problems with adolescent pregnancy and parenting. In particular, theyShow MoreRelatedThe Process Of Having A Baby982 Words   |  4 PagesThe Process of Having a Baby Having a baby is a wonderful event and the process is even better. Controlled Reader Essay - 1569 Words

An author can only partially structure an experience in an attempt to elicit a desired response from the reader, for there are two types of readers an author must consider: the implied reader and the actual reader. The implied reader is â€Å"assumed and created by the work itself† whereas, the actual reader brings his/her own experiences to the text and thus each reader takes away a different message from a text (MacMannus, para 1). Du Boiss narrative, â€Å"A Mild Suggestion†, attempts to ensure a certain response, from the reader, by including a description of the passengers reactions to the colored mans story, but to some degree, the effects on the reader vary depending on the experiences he or she brings to the text. However, without this†¦show more content†¦Clearly, she has been bothered by his suggestion and resigns silently to her cabin. The mention of her silence is important, because it demonstrates that there is no one there with whom she is willing to share a reaction. The presentation of her as an isolated individual furthers the reader’s feeling of sympathy toward her and allows for women in her situation to identify with her felt isolation and ostracization. Du Bois finishes with her reaction, because it is the most powerful. Thus, the reaction of the Little Old Lady develops pathos in the reader and forces the reader to consider the deeper meaning of the colored mans story. The reader is also affected by the reaction of the Southerner and the Woman. Throughout, these two individuals are presented as unified and in the end the Southerner chooses the Woman. Specifically, the narrator states that these two were heard to say something about fools (94). Who exactly are the fools? Are the fools the Southerner and the Woman for having listened to the story? Are they the emancipationists who gave the colored man a voice? Or are the fools all emancipated colored men? The word fool is used in a plural sense and consequently leaves the reader to openly interpret its meaning. The effect on the audience is one of disassociation from the Southerner because the reader does not want to be lumped in with theShow MoreRelatedThe Control Of Society In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding775 Words   |  4 PagesFlies, a society is controlled by a select few; allowing the characters to develop their own society through their rules and decisions, and entitling their socie ty to transform into savagery.
